Balinroey is a short 10 minute drive from Clogher - one of the most ancient places in Ireland and was once the capital city of the Principality of Oriel. Its cathedral holds the ‘Cloghor’, one of the ‘Three stones of Erin’ and dates from the mid-18th century. Its next-door neighbour, Augher, is home to Spur Royal Castle, a typical plantation castle with an interesting history. A short 10-min drive will take you to the breath-taking views from Errigal Keerogue. Here you can view the ruins of St Kieran’s Church with its very early cross. The church dates from 1489 and was of Franciscan origin. Five mins further along you can visit Knockmany, the Hill of Aine, a Pagan Goddess of Love. It is the site of a large grave called Knockmany Chambered Cairn, whose stones are carved concentric circles. No one is quite sure what these circles represent but some scholars connect them to the religious cult of a Mother Goddess in ancient Syria about 3000BC. Another ancient site situated only a few miles further, located in the picturesque Favour Royal Forest, is St Patrick’s Chair and Well, which is reputed to have mystical powers.
