Situated in the village of Straid, Ballylagan Organic Farm Guesthouse offers elegant accommodation in a 19th century farm dwelling. There is an on-site tea room, farm shop, free WiFi and free parking on site.
A delicious organic breakfast is served each morning using ingredients from the farm. Light lunches, cakes, and scones are served in the tea room, with its charming outdoor seating area.
Rooms at Ballylagan are traditionally furnished, and each benefits from a tiled en-suite bathroom, picturesque views, and a flat-screen TV. An adjacent self-catering apartment, which is located above the property's farm shop, is also available and features a furnished kitchen, a double room and bathroom.
Belfast is a 20-minute drive from the building, and Causeway Coastal Route can be reached in 15 minutes by car.
My parents bought the farm at Ballylagan in 1976, and in 1990 Patricia and I, seeking somewhere more suitable to bring up our young family, converted the derelict corn mill beside my parents’ dwelling and moved to Straid. Soon after, I gave up my job in Belfast to become a house husband and trainee farmer. Wisely, Patricia continued working as a landscape architect, a decision that enabled us to stay afloat –making money on small farms is almost impossible. Very soon we converted to organic production – only the third farm in NI to take this route. In the late 1990s we opened a part time shop on the farm, not because we wanted to become shop keepers, more because we were anxious to try and make some money on what we regarded as a premium product. HRH the Prince of Wales (a stalwart of the organic movement) brought us a lot of welcome publicity in 1998 when he officially open our little shop. In November 2011 we opened the Tea Room at Ballylagan Organic Farm - the first eatery in Northern Ireland to use wholly organic ingredients and in spring 2012 we welcomed the first guests to our Guest House.
