Set in 2 acres of tranquil wooded gardens, Borrowdale Gates is a privately owned family-run hotel with panoramic views of Borrowdale Valley.

The charming rooms have TVs and tea and coffee facilities, and many have breathtaking views of the valley and fells. There is free Wi-Fi in the public areas of Borrowdale Gates Hotel.

Borrowdale Gates Restaurant serves traditional British cuisine and local Lakeland produce, including lamb, game and fish. There is an extensive wine list, and guests can also enjoy afternoon tea in the cosy lounge by the open fire.

On the edge of Grange (near Keswick), this Lakeland house is less than a 5-minute drive from the shores of Derwent Water. Set in the English Lake District, walking and climbing routes are near Borrowdale Gates.

Information about the host

Borrowdale Gates Hotel was built in 1861 by philanthropist Mrs Margret Heathcote. She ran a school room within the property and even a chapel in one of the upstairs rooms. In the early 1900's it became a small hotel with a dozen rooms. Subsequent owners added extension after extension to the point that it looked rather unattractive. The previous owners, Colin & Joy Harrison, with a little demolition and sympathetic renovation, returned it to a beautiful and homely country house hotel.

We take pride in our community, using environmentally friendly biomass boiler, locally sourced produce and tradesmen. The hotel is an active supporter of local events such as the Keswick Show and Borrowdale Shepherds Meet.

Set in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley, there is a wide range of walks and cycling opportunities, direct from the hotel doorstep so guests can leave their car behind. Being a 10 minute walk from the shores of Derwent Water, there are numerous water activities and boat trips available. Further afield, visitors can explore the heritage of the Lakes such as Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, as well as Lakeland's first whiskey distillery on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake.
