Information about the host

Chestnuts is our own home, originally built in 1998 in the village where Norah was born and grew up. As our children flew the nest and Bob took early retirement, we decided to open our home to guests. We enjoy meeting people from all over the world, all walks of life, all ages and interests. We try to make everyone feel welcome and at ease, whether it is for one night or for a longer stay. We have no staff, just the two of us and our assortment of furry and feathery family members and we do our best to ensure guests are comfortable, well-fed and enjoy their stay.

We are both retired now from paid employment but by no means retired from life. We enjoy walking, gardening, looking after animals in Norah's Ark Small Animal Boarding and our aviaries of owls. Bob is an avid railway modeller, currently working on a layout portraying our favourite holiday destination in Austria. We often travel to Austria on our cherished Honda Goldwing Trike, covering 3000+ miles in around 3 weeks.

Our immediate neighbourhood is a peaceful quiet village. There are walks where we often spot Red Squirrels and Roe Deer as well as a wide variety of wild birds. Our nearest pub restaurant is 5 minutes walk away down a path or 15 minutes by road, although we do serve meals if they are pre-ordered. We are ideally situated for a stay before cyclists start the C2C from Whitehaven, two miles away from Chestnuts. We can keep their cars on our drive until they return. Whitehaven is a Georgian town with a busy Marina and interesting buildings and attractions. Chestnuts is also near to St Bees on the beautiful Solway coast and Ennerdale, Wasdale and Ravenglass are within easy driving distance.
