Amanda started a traditional B & B in Wells in 2001. This has and continues to enable her to meet people of different cultures/backgrounds, which is a great pleasure. Amanda has always been interested in design, interiors and craftwork. She reclaims and paints furniture and makes Linen Lamp Shades amongst other things. This interest has rubbed off onto her daughter Daniela, which led them to open a Vintage, Antique and Unique Gift shop in Wells called La Belle Brocante in 2013 (Close to Cottage). The shop now under Daniela's sole management, inspired the decoration of Florence Cottage and the pair of them enjoyed finding and restoring exactly the right beautiful pieces for each room. Florence Cottage was bought in 2014 and the renovation has been a labour of love and pleasant surprises. Unearthing the downstairs Flagstone Floor and the magnificent Medieval Fire place was outstanding. However the 'piece de resistance' was the uncovering of the Medieval Wall Painting in the first floor bedroom, which was restored over a 12 month period. Amanda's other main passion is travelling and together with her partner Tony spent months travelling around Europe in their Campervan in 2017/2018.
Florence Cottage is situated opposite the picturesque St. Cuthbert Church and is a stone's throw away from the High Street. A short walk up the High Street and you enter the Market Place with it's fine old buildings, Cafes & Restaurants. A bustling Farmer's Market is held here every Wednesday & Saturday. A few steps through Penniless Porch & you enter the beautiful Cathedral Green & the magnificent 13th Century Wells Cathedral towers above you. It has approximately 300 Statues on the spectacular West Front & is the earliest English Cathedral built in the Gothic style. Adjoining the Cathedral is Vicars’ Close, believed to be the most complete example of a medieval Close in the UK. This landmark was designed to provide communal accommodation for the Vicars Choral, who sang daily within the Cathedral as they do today. Walking through the 'Bishops Eye' (from the Market Place) you come to the Bishop's Palace. Home to the Bishops of Bath & Wells for 800 years. This stunning medieval palace is open for all. Surrounded by a breath taking Moat, you cross the Drawbridge to experience artefacts/exhibitions on art/history as well as 14 acres of mature landscaped Gardens including the 'Wells'.
