Higher Coombe is a detached Victorian granite farmhouse situated between Bovey Tracey and Hennock, on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor. We have 5 bedrooms including a comfortable en-suite guest room with views of the gardens, a large hall, breakfast room / study and private lounge. We have lovely gardens to the front and rear which our guests are welcome to use. Our property backs onto undulating pastureland, home to sheep, cows, pheasants and foxes at varying times of the year. A peaceful and comfortable get-away, ideal for couples, nature lovers and those who appreciate the outdoors. Please note: Our home is approached via a slightly bumpy unmade farm-track from a minor road so please drive with care.
Eleanor and I were brought up in London but settled in beautiful South Devon seven years ago after many years of teaching in the U.K and overseas in The Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Kenya. Eleanor still teaches in Exeter and Ben is recently retired and developing his work as an artist. We have two boys, one still studying in Falmouth and the other trying to establish himself as an illustrator. To complete our family we have a cat called Sidney and Becka a very friendly cocker Spaniel. We both enjoy exploring the Moor and when we find time we complete a stretch of the South West Coast Path which runs from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset (630 miles).
While only minutes from the centre of Bovey (the ‘Gateway to the Moor’) we are surrounded by rolling pastureland with sheep and cattle as our neighbours. We are a stone’s throw from the Dartmoor National Park which is beautiful throughout the year and a haven for walkers, canoeists, cyclists and photographers, a vast ancient landscape of stunning views, awe inspiring tors, deep wooded valleys, fast flowing rivers, and rugged, wide open spaces. We have some great country pubs nearby and beautiful locations on the Moor within easy reach. Haytor and Hound Tor are close, as is the Parke Estate set on the banks of the river Bovey. Other places of interest include the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Bovey, Lustleigh (with a great pub), Fingles Bridge, Asburton, Buckfast Abbey and Widecombe in the Moor. The nearest point on the coast is Teignmouth while The South Hams with its beautiful beaches is well situated for a day’s excursion. The transition town of Totnes with its rich history, alternative culture, quality shops, markets and cultural events is only 25 minutes away and definitely worth a visit, especially on market days. We also have good access to Exeter and Plymouth. via the A38.
