In 4 acres of lawns and tended gardens, the elegant Keswick Country House Hotel is only a 5-minute walk from the centre of Keswick. The restaurant offers fine dining and lovely garden views. Each spacious room has a TV, tea/coffee facilities and ensuite bathroom. Many rooms boast views of the Lake District fells or hotel gardens, and some have a separate seating area. The Lonsdale Restaurant uses local produce in the creative menu, served in luxurious surroundings. There is free WiFi in public areas and a bar lounge. Some rooms are situated in the old Keswick Railway Station building on the ground floor and 1st floor. They are connected to the main hotel via the lounge, please note there is no lift in the Station building. The beautiful gardens at The Keswick Hotel have outdoor seating and walkways and guests can play croquet on the lawns.
The Keswick Hotel was originally owned by the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway Company and was built to coincide with the opening of the railway in 1865. However, the hotel itself was not completed until 1869 - as the date above the main entrance records. The station opened to passenger traffic on 2 January 1865, and later closed on 6 March 1972. There have been many famous visitors to the hotel over the years. On 14th August 1895 the Earl of Lonsdale hosted a party with dignitaries such as Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm, Lord and Lady Churchill and the Marquis of Worcester amongst the guests. The original guest list of the party can be seen displayed at the hotel. The largest highlight for the hotel is a visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during October 1956, which is recorded on three large photographs in the lounge areas. In 1997 the station building (which officially closed in 1972) was converted into 8 superior bedrooms. Each bedroom is named after a famous painter. In 2002 Choice Hotels purchased the property and continues to strive to provide excellent service to all its guests. The Keswick Country House Hotel remains one of the best hotels in the Lake District.
The Keswick Hotel is only two minutes walk from the bustling market town of Keswick, with its eclectic mix of shops, pubs and restaurants. For the adventurous, Lake Derwentwater offers a variety of water sports with numerous walks and mountain bike trails beginning at its shores. More energetic, but equally popular, are climbs to the summit of Latrigg, Skiddaw and Blencathra. The Hotel offers the prime location from which to visit many famous attractions throughout the Lake District, such as Lake Windermere, England’s longest lake, The World of Beatrix Potter exhibition at Bowness-on-Windermere and the poet William Wordsworth’s first home, ‘Dove Cottage’. However you choose to spend your leisure time, the Keswick Country House Hotel is the perfect place to stay whilst exploring the delights of the English Lake District.
