Uttoxeter has always been a thriving market town situated on the Staffordshire and Derbyshire border close to the river Dove. It has a charter dated from 1252 and a regular Wednesday market since 1309 when it once traded butter, cheese, meat and leather to London.Uttoxeter itself has been officially spelt 77 different ways as it has evolved over the centuries, originally called 'Wotocheshed', or 'Wot's homestead on the Heath' dating back to the Anglo - Saxon time c.600A.D. Uttoxeter soon became an important part of the Midlands infrastructure and soon people travelled here through many routes. Some using the local canal routes. In 1848, Uttoxeter built its first railway through from Crewe to Derby. In the following 20 years two more lines were added making it one of the key junctions in the railway network at that time. Uttoxeter's size grew with its popularity as people found it easier to visit the thriving little market town. New places to visit began to open to attract more visitors, such as the famous Uttoxeter racetrack.
