Leith is the old port and docks of Edinburgh, steeped in history it is a hidden gem with a bustling bar and café scene and boasts a very vibrant community. Up till the 1920's Leith was a separate entity, distinct from Edinburgh and as a consequence it has retained its own character both in its people and atmosphere. Activity is focused mainly around the area on the Leith waterfront known as the Shore, with many diverse bars and restaurants now catering for locals and tourist alike. It has been extensively restored and is now a cosmopolitan mix of converted warehouses, loft apartments, restaurants, & pubs. It has become the top foodie destination in Edinburgh and among the best in the UK with an enormous choice of restaurants including 2 Michelin star restaurants within its relatively small area. Close by on the site of what was Henry Robb’s shipyard is Ocean Terminal indoor shopping complex. Designed originally along the lines of a ship by Sir Terence Conran, it is now home to the famous Royal Yacht Britannia, designer shopping, gym and 12 screen multiplex cinema plus a number of well-known restaurant chains. It is also is the nearest stop for hop on-hop off tourist buses.
