Perfect for two, the Old Mill is a modern, eclectic and cosy conversion of 1700s water mill in the beautiful Scottish Borders region of Scotland. It's a really spacious and inviting space following a thoroughly modern redesign in 2018 and makes a perfect couple's hideaway. Inside the Old Mill's thick stone walls you'll find stylish interiors, a woodburning stove, open-plan living, a well-equipped kitchen and super-comfy bed on the mezzanine floor. You'll also be treated to spa-style touches (deep bath, rain-forest shower and spa products), a Nespresso coffee machine, free WiFi and Bluetooth speakers. The property has been professionally interior designed with a Farrow & Ball colour scheme including a deep aubergine kitchen, grey painted floors and beautiful painted shutters and woodwork. Modern styling is carefully balanced with reclaimed, antique and industrial touches which draw out the heritage of the property. Head out the back door to the woodland-garden area with seating. Head deeper into the Dod Mill grounds for rivers-side walks, fruit-picking in the small orchard and wildlife spotting (ducks, otters, heron etc). You can also feed Dod Mill's sheep (on request).
We, Ruth and Jamie Knibbs, moved to Dod Mill (the wider site around Old Mill) in 2017. We "escaped the city" with our three small children and set-up home in the original miller's house at Dod Mill. With sheep, woods, rivers, a pond and fields, Dod Mill is a 5 acre smallholding and a wonderful place to live. We love the wildlife, the river sounds and grounds where colours are constantly changing with the seasons. Our vision is to turn Dod Mill into a place of escape and retreat for our guests. Our renovation works have focused on creating little havens of peace and design. The Old Mill is a place to slow down from hectic lives - spend the whole holiday here or take time to enjoy the beautiful Scottish Borders and Edinburgh. Jamie has a background in Geology and Ruth in Economics though we have both worked in various corporate fields over our careers. Ruth was brought up in the farming and hospitality industries and it's been nice to return to both of those roots with Dod Mill.
Old Mill is part of Dod Mill, a collection of buildings and grounds which once served as an important corn mill in the area. The Old Mill was powered by a water wheel (still in place), and served by a mill pond and mill lade. There are several bothies peppered around the property - a nod to very creative owners in more recent decades. The nearest town is the Royal Burgh of Lauder, just 4 miles away. The Spotty Dog deli and coffee shop is a real favourite of ours, as is the Flat Cat Gallery (coffee and art!). The Purple Plum is a wonderful fruit and veg shop, with lots of local produce. Shaws Fine Meats is a renowned butcher on the high street and sources from within 25 miles of the town. There are great places to eat in the Firebrick Brasserie (fine dining) and Carfraemill (where the A68 meets the A697). Lauder is also home to Thirlestane Castle which is one of Scotland's finest castles with beautiful grounds. From a distance, you'll see its rose-pink turrets rising out from the trees - it looks like something out of a fairy tale! The Scottish Borders is full of Scotland's history, landscape and culture. The wonders of Edinburgh are an easy drive away (30 miles).
