Orkneylodge

Orkneylodge is situated in the centre of the island of Orkney, offering room-only accommodation, 7 miles from the city of Kirkwall and 6 miles from Stromness.

The guest house has large rooms with super king-size beds in all double rooms. There are 6 rooms with sea and garden views, and 5 rooms with field and farmland views with Grindlay Castle to the rear of our house.

Orkneylodge has a garden guests can relax in, with scenic views of 12 islands and a ferry port, with 5 ferries per day going to Flotta and Hoy. Although bringing a car is recommended, there are also 5 buses per day to Kirkwall and 2 buses per day to Stromness. A circular open-top tourist bus goes past us three times per day.

Orkneylodge is situated at Houton Bay in the parish of Orphir, which is a rural and coastal location only 15 minutes drive to the main towns, airport and ferry terminals in Orkney. The front rooms have views of Scapa Flow and several islands. We recommend you have transport to get around. Our rooms are spacious hotel size and all are en-suite and easily accessible on the ground floor. Orkneylodge has a high standard 4-star Visit Scotland grading.

Your hosts have professional interests and background in archaeology, culture, languages, history and sea transport, and of course also in hospitality and tourism. In our smallholding outside to the rear of the main building we have some chickens, sheep and horses.

Orkneylodge is situated in a quiet rural and coastal location and is built next to one of the first ever naval seaplane bases in the world, operated during the First World War. Orkney was once a major naval base for thousands of personnel at Scapa Flow. This is where the British Fleet was anchored and serviced during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Houton Bay is also the location for the ferry to the South Isles of Hoy and Flotta. The bay often has seals swimming around, many sea-birds, and there are local walks to enjoy.
