Information about the host

The Estate is owned by the Van Puijenbroek family, bought for their love of Scotland and for the excellent rural sports. The Estate covers approximately ten thousand acres. It stretches from the shores of Loch Scridain south to the sea cliffs at Carsaig, overlooking Jura, Islay and Colonsay. All 3 of the self-catering cottages overlook Loch Scridain and across to Ben More, the island's highest mountain and only Munro. Killunaig Farmhouse is a traditional stone built house situated two miles out of Pennyghael village. It has a lovely walled garden and overlooks Killunaig reef with its resident population of both common and grey seals. Torrans Cottage is a further three quarters of a mile to the west. It stands in its own enclosed garden off a farm track with spectacular views. This property would be suitable for some disabled visitors and wheelchair users. A further mile and a half to the west is Beach Bridge Cottage pronounced Bay-ach it overlooks the small estuary of the River Beach. All 3 properties either have an open fire or log burning stove and total electric heating throughout. Electricity and logs are provided at no extra cost. The Estate has a 'one-dog' policy.

“We understand that this is a difficult time, and there is much uncertainty which can be very worrying. If you have a holiday booked at any of our properties over the coming months, please feel free to get in touch with us, we would be more than happy to put your mind at ease as to how we are making sure the houses are ready for you or we can help you re-schedule or postpone your stay with us if you wish. Please also note that we have been advised that Calmac have ceased advanced bookings on all of its services up to and including 15th July 2020.

The Isle of Mull is also known as Eagle Island. We have 20 breeding pairs of Sea Eagles and 35 breeding pairs of Golden Eagles on the island. I have seen up to seven Sea Eagles sat on the reef in front of Killunaig Farmhouse. There has been recorded up to 5 breeding pairs of Hen Harrier on Pennyghael Estate. Four species of Owl, Peregrine and Merlin all nest on the estate along with a host of other birds. We regularly see 7 individual Otters on the estate. I am happy to point you to the best viewing spots. The cliffs along the southern boundary of Pennyghael Estate are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and are a real Mecca for Geologists. As a family we enjoy hunting for fossils and watching the feral Goats. We have some wonderful hill lochs for fishing and you can collect mussels and Oysters from the beach. Pennyghael is a good base. To the North is Tobermory (better known to your children as Balamory). To the west is Iona (the birth place of Christianity in Scotland) with its Abbey. To the east is Duart Castle. Just the other side of the Loch is Ben More if you want to bag a Munro. There are local boat trips to see Wales, Dolphins, Basking Sharks and Puffins.
