Doncaster is known throughout the world for horse racing and the iconic locomotives, which were designed & built at the Plant Works. However, there is much more to discover about this historic market town on the banks of the River Don and the area surrounding it. The town of Doncaster was first founded by the Romans when the River Don marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, making us older than York. Danum, as the Romans called the town, was eventually to boast a large Roman fort, part of which can still be seen in the grounds of Doncaster Minster in the town center. Trading with the Romans was established in the ‘vicus’ or local settlement and Doncaster Market still occupies the very same spot, nearly 2,000 years later! The main Roman road coming through the town eventually became the Great North Road and with Doncaster’s central location, the town soon became an important stop en route for travelers going north or south. Over time the number of coaching inns grew and of course, sufficient stabling had to be provided for the many horses coming through the town. This inevitably led to racing as early as the 16th century, but it was in the Georgian era when the blossoming of the town itself seems to have been linked with the strong stablishment of horse racing. In fact, the oldest regulated horse race in the world remains the Doncaster Cup which was first run in 1766 and which celebrates 250 years in 2016. The highlight of Doncaster’s social calendar comes in September when the whole town seems to stop and celebrate the oldest classic race in the world, the St Leger Stakes. Dating from 1776 the St Leger now has a 10 day festival wrapped around it so that Doncastrians and visitors alike can celebrate the history and culture of the town. From classical music concerts to live jazz, from family events around town to the thrill of the big race itself, nothing compares to the excitement of St Leger Festival Week! The Georgian period was a golden era for Doncaster. Many fine inns were built, such as the Salutation or the Crown in Bawtry. However, even these fine surroundings were not grand enough for the ambitious town leaders and so a Mansion House was built, to entertain in extravagant style. It remains today, standing proudly on the High Street as one of only three original Georgian Mansion Houses in the country. And following a complete restoration of the façade in late 2015, the Mansion House once again stands tall in the centre of Doncaster. As you would expect with a town that is nearly 2,000 years old there are many historical figures and quirks of history associated with Doncaster. Here are just a few to whet your appetite! reference: Doncaster Visitor Guide. 2016
