Located in the Village of Hilltown, Co. Down, the Downshire Arms first opened to the public in 1824. By the 1970’s though, the building had been allowed to fall into dereliction. Fortunately, it has since been rescued and restored by its current owners and refurbished to an excellent standard. Providing guests with modern comforts without compromising the charm and character of its distinguished past. The Downshire arms management are still striving to ensure that travelers in the Mournes will find The Downshire Arms a comfortable and well kept place to stay. There are a total of 6 self-catering courtyard apartments (originally the stable block) to chose from, either 3 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms or 1 bedroom apartments. One of our apartments is also disabled friendly. Each apartment has its own, living room, kitchen and bathroom. There is private parking also. There is a stylishly designed Bar and Restaurant onsite and musical entertainment is played every weekend and don’t be surprised if, whilst sitting in the bar, someone starts playing a whistle or fiddle. It’s that kind of place.
The Downshire Arms Apartments are located between the two of Northern Ireland’s most popular mountain biking trails, Rostrevor (8 miles) and Castlewellan (10 miles). In Rostrevor, the majesty of the Mournes has to be seen to be fully appreciated, and there is nowhere better to do this than at the peak of Rostrevor's MTB trails overlooking Carlingford Lough and the towns of Rostrevor and Warrenpoint. With epic views comes epic trails, and riders have the joy of a 27km red loop which takes in every kind of feature you could want in a trail centre. Just to top things off, Rostrevor is home to Ireland's first ever purpose built DH trails, Mega Mission and On the Pulse. With a great café at the trailhead and free parking, the home to the Red Bull Foxhunt is a must on every mountain bikers list. In Castlewellan, statistically the most popular trail centre in Northern Ireland, Castlewellan Mountain Bike Trails boast 19km of red trail, as well as two popular black options and some quality blue and green trails. Enjoy the pump track that overlooks Castlewellan Lake and its historic Victorian castle, before exploring trails that provide bags of flow and fun.
