This 4-star Edwardian guesthouse is close to Eastbourne's seafront, theatres and conference centres. Free high-speed Wi-Fi is accessible throughout and The Mowbray also serves award-winning breakfasts. Guests can enjoy access to a 24-hour honesty bar. There is plenty of on street parking close to the Mowbray. On request we provide Parking Permits at just £3:00 per day which remain in force until 11:00 the following morning.
In the heart of Eastbourne's Theatreland, The Mowbray occupies a prime position on the corner of an elegant Edwardian terrace, connecting the seafront with the theatres and conference centres. This family-run guesthouse overlooks Devonshire Park and the International Tennis Courts, just a stone's throw from the beach and the promenade, and only a short distance from the town centre.
All of the en suite rooms are front facing, with some enjoying views of the rolling South Downs. Each room has tea/coffee making facilities and a TV with Freeview channels and a DVD player.
Taking great pride in the stylish décor, cleanliness, friendly atmosphere and home cooked food, the resident owners, Darren and Laura, provide excellent value for money and a personal service. The Mowbray received the Les Routiers Guest House of The Year 2016.
The building was built by the Duke of Devonshire as a private dwelling. During the WW2 the RAF used it to for Canadian Airmen & following the war it became a private hotel / guest house. Where the name Mowbray comes from is unclear. Some say it is because one of the architects involved in the building of the terraced row was a Mr A W M Mowbray. Others point to the DeMowbray family who landed a little further along the coast during the Norman conquest. Whatever the origins the Mowbray has been welcoming guests for over 90 years. Famous tennis stars have stayed in the past such as Steffi Graff & Gabriella Sabatini because it is so close to the Devonshire Park Tennis Courts. With the theatres also so close the Mowbray has hosted many stars of stage & screen. Roy with sons Asher & Saul Burman acquired the Mowbray in March 2020. Father & sons have for the last 25 years all been & continue to operate hospitality & other small businesses in Eastbourne & nearby currently including a pub two restaurants & holiday cottage accommodation. Eastbourne has plenty to offer the nature enthusiast ranging from the impressive cliffs and lighthouse at Beachy Head to the peaceful woodland walks of the South Downs National Park. Not forgetting one of the most beautiful seafronts in England and a great variety of cultural activities in our lovely town of Eastbourne.
