The Thatched Cottage is just two miles from Battle Abbey and the battlefields where the famous 1066 Battle of Hastings took place. The town of Battle is a vibrant mix of coffee shops, tea rooms, independent boutiques, restaurants and the usual high street stores, with a good mix of history and pretty buildings thrown in for good measure. You can visit the famous 11th century abbey that was built by William the Conqueror and explore the ruins and grounds and enjoy the interactive displays and information at the visitors centre. In the Autumn months you can watch the re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and this draws performers from all over Europe. If you are lucky enough to visit during Bonfire season then you must catch the torch lit procession that marches through the town and finishes with a huge bonfire and fantastic firework display. Along with these events the town has a busy social calendar throughout the year, with music, arts and even a scarecrow festival, so something for all the family. Bexhill on Sea is under ten miles away and has a more relaxed, nostalgic seaside town feel.
