One of our top picks in Edinburgh. The Georgian Valentine City Centre Guest House is located in Edinburgh city centre at the South-West corner of the historic Old Town. It is the closest guest house to Edinburgh Castle, which is within a 15-minute walk. Free WiFi is available in all rooms.

Built in 1813, the guest house offers accommodation situated over 4 floors. Rooms feature a digital TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Irons, hairdryers, and umbrellas are available upon request.

An a la carte continental breakfast is available at the property and can be served directly to your room. If breakfast is included in your rate and you would prefer a cooked breakfast, guests can dine at an award-winning nearby cafe for no extra charge.

The Valentine Guest House is situated within walking distance of all city centre attractions, including restaurants, shops, pubs, and cinemas. Edinburgh International Conference Centre is just a 10-minute walk away.

Information about the host

The Valentine City Centre Guest House is situated on all four floors of an 1813 Georgian Town House, a significant building in Edinburgh's history being a prototype of the Edinburgh 'three-door flats' layout later used throughout the city. Such a historic building can have no lift of course, but if you book a room on one of the upper floors up the wide original stair case, then we will of course assist with luggage if you would like. The building is 'B' listed, due to it's history, and the original worn stone stairs are still used between the lower and upper 'halves' of the property! Tollcross? A long time ago, cities raised part of their finance by charging a toll or tax to enter the city,One of the tolls was in the area now known as Tollcross centred on the junction where the famous clock now stands. Originally a pendulum clock, in 1926 it became spring driven and was wound once a week by the makers. Gilmore 'Street' was constructed in 1798 through property owned by Samuel Gilmore who owned a ropemaking factory on the north side of Gilmore Place, as it became known. Older maps show the spelling as 'Gilmour', which is probably the original authentic spelling.

Vicky and Rob are regular theatre goers, especially at the King's Theatre at the end of the street, seeing everything from Agatha Christie plays and musicals through to the annual Panto! Being a local family we can tell you all about Edinburgh's colourful history, as well as where to get the best Scottish food and local live music. The guest house is situated in the middle of Sean Connery territory, we've met Sean and old schoolmates of his and we can tell you all about his local roots - we are surrounded by his birthplace, schools, early employment and the theatre where he got his break!

Perhaps the best location within any town or city is being just far enough from the noise of the busiest traffic and nightlife, but still close enough that all the main attractions are within easy walking distance. This is what the location of Valentine City Centre Guest House offers; situated at the South-West of the historic Old Town, in the Tollcross area of the city, the 200 year old building is just metres from the King's Theatre, close to the Meadows and a short walk from Lothian Road and Princes Street. Well located for the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, it is a 10 minute walk to the Grassmarket in the shadow of Edinburgh castle and the buildings of the famous Royal Mile. One of the few areas on the route of the regular (non premium cost) 35 bus from/to the airport, frequent local buses from right at our door will take you to all other parts of the city such as those with the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Botanic Gardens.
