This charming cottage has been expertly converted from a former hay store. It takes its unusual name from the ancient ceremony of wassailing, drinking a 'cup' and singing to the apple trees in cider-producing regions. Accommodation: Entrance from patio via French window to light living room with tiled floor, woodburner, comfortable seating and dining table. Separate, well-equipped ‘galley’ kitchen area with stable door to patio. Stairs from living room to small landing. Two bedrooms, one with double bed, the other with full size bunk beds. Luxury shower room/wc with big walk-in shower. Immediately outside the cottage is a delightful sunny patio where guests will want to sit with a glass or two in the evenings, and just across the drive is an additional grassed garden area. Guests also have access to a large paddock behind owner’s house which leads to a footpath and to their medieval apple orchard from where there are wonderful views across to the Mendip Hills. Facilities: Woodburner. Gas central heating (underfloor heating downstairs). First basket of logs, gas, elec., bed linen, towels & welcome pack inc. in rent. ** Space for visitors’ own cot. Flat screen TV with DVD.
The owners of Wassail Cottage have expended enormous thought and care to create highly attractive accommodation in a contemporary style, the very light open-plan living area downstairs giving a welcoming feel of space.
Approximately a mile from the attractive village of Wedmore and only three from Cheddar with its famous gorge and caves, Wassail Cottage is also admirably placed for visiting the almost endless attractions and places of interest in the area. The limestone hills of the Mendips caused the formation of many caverns over millennia and a rival to Cheddar is nearby Wookey Hole, which now has numerous attractions for younger visitors. Wells, an interesting town with a fine cathedral and close, and Glastonbury, scene of the great annual festival, are both well worth a visit. A little further afield, the World Heritage city of Bath with its Roman remains and superb Georgian architecture and Bristol with its many attractions (Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Zoo and Cabot Circus Shopping Centre) both deserve a whole day's exploration. For outdoor enthusiasts the countryside round about is full of excellent walks and cycle rides and the unique Somerset Levels and West Somerset coastline are easily reached.
