This delightful 19th Century gate lodge was at one time the estate schoolhouse, which might account for the unusually ornate slatework on the roof, which makes it look a little like a gingerbread house! Although it looks small on the outside the Lodge provides comfortable accommodation for 4 people. It is all on one level and therefore ideal for older people (although note that the doors may unfortunately be too narrow for some wheelchairs). It has some of the best views on the estate across the Solway Firth to the Lake District and the Isle of Man, along the Colvend Coast taking in Southerness lighthouse and the Portling cliffs and across rolling farmland to Criffel Mountain. Good walks can be had from the door, especially down onto Powillimount beach just 500 metres away. It sits at the end of the West Avenue leading from Arbigland House where it meets the lane running down to the sea at Powillimount.
Together with my wife Sheri and our 2 children we run the Arbigland Estate, which we share with 2 dogs, 2 horses, 500 cows, 700 sheep, hens, bees, red squirrels, wild geese, otters, dolphins and the lovely people who come and stay in our holiday cottages. Always on the end of a mobile.
The "Steamboat" pub in Carsethorn is a 5 minute walk along the beach. It does really good food and is dog friendly. You can also sit out on the water's edge. The Arbigland Estate is in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Noith Estuary National Scenic Area. It is the ideal base for mountain biking (minutes from two of the 7 Stanes) Birdwatching (Mersehead 15 mins away) Golf (Southerness Championship Golf Course 10mins away) or collapsing and revelling in the amazing surroundings. There are fantastic walks from the door. The bus goes to Kirkbean, which is a twenty minute walk away.
