Quay Hill is considered by many locals to have perhaps the best and most elevated views over Strangford Lough. The house itself was originally built in 1960 as a timber framed holiday house along the lines of the famed clapperboard beach houses of Cape Cod in New England. Since extended and modernised on several occasions, it now provides the perfect comfortable eyrie from which to view the Lough, and is perfectly located for exploring the area by land (or by sea if you want to bring a boat). Quay Hill is set in 17 acres of woodland and pasture, with the woods essentially behind the house leading to the top of the hill where the Rath (a usually circular earthwork serving as stronghold and residence of an ancient Irish) of Rath Cunningham is found. The house itself has the main living spaces on the upper floor and has 4 good bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 reception rooms and 2 utility rooms, along with a modern well equipped galley kitchen. During your stay it is exclusively for your own use. The owners are sometimes seen playing with boats at the quay or down at the private shed, some 300 yards away from the house and hidden from view. Outside is a large wooden deck with table and chairs, swing seat, BBQ etc.

Now almost retired, we live in the hills in County Antrim, and our holiday home, Quay Hill is but an hour away but in a completely different climate, both warmer and drier! We are immensely proud of what we have created there in a wonderful and unique environment. We love the stunning views, the peace, and the endless birdsong from Curlews on the mudflats. We have been in tourism, initially by accident, for around 15 years, and used to rent out a previous holiday home on the island of Luing in the Hebrides with similar advantages, but ultimately too inaccessible for us. We also own and charter a 100ft Turkish sailing gulet out of Bodrum (www.salamandervoyages.com), typically with 12 guests and 4 crew on private charter for around 26 weeks a year. We look forward to welcoming you but also plan to leave you in peace while you are at Quay Hill, other than occasional visits to cut the grass and perhaps use one of our boats.
